Åland Islands

Where to catch…

Aland Islands is the unique archipelago at the very heart of the Baltic Sea. It is the only district in Finland with its own self-administration, parliament and citizenship. Aland’s history is strongly connected with Russia, it was a part of the Russian empire during 1809-1918. After the Revolution Russia lost Alands and islands got the authonomy. Stockholm is only 120 km from there, so Aland’s people speak Swedish as well.

Aland islands is an intimate nook at the very heart of the urbanistic Europe. Everything here is nearby. It is called the millionaire islands, because almost everyone here is the owner of the island.

Such ferries as Viking, Silja, Birca, Eckero stop by the islands in any case. In summer Alands look like an ordinary resort, but not only tourist stay here at this time.
Fishermen of all fishing confessions from all European countries come here to try their fortune in salmon trolling (the annuary festival takes place here on May, 26), in search of sea-trout (March and April) and hoping to catch a pike – the so-called “alandian crocodile.”

Pike is the main fishing capture of the Aland islands. It is so plentifully spread here, that, on our opinion, it’s a pike that should be put on the Aland‘s emblem instead of the deer. The main reason of such a plenty is not even a unique natural wealth of Aland islands, but environmental friendliness of its people.

Aland islands consist of 80 license area from 1 km to 130 km each. You’ll need a separate license in every area, if you’d like fishing in several ones. There are also “private waters” forbidden for fishing. Aland’s climate is rather mild – inner skerries freeze at the end of January and break up in March. By the way, it’s a perfect time for winter perch fishing.

Starting from March one can catch sea-trout. When it comes to May – it’s time for salmon-trolling. Pike fishing here is good all the year round, so you always have a chance to catch a fish of your dream. But if you dream of the ultimate trophy – April is your time.

Our expert Peter Sellander – fishing guide from the “Norre” fishing camp – caught 14,6 kg pike the last year. And that was the biggest pike of the Aland islands for the last 10 years! Pike was caught on casting rod in Stroma license area 10.04.2008. After the photoshoot it was carefully released. So, it’s still there!

There are several cottage camps in the Aland islands. But not all of them seem to be appropriate for accommodation – sometimes the trouble is in its location, other times – in boats, some cottages are simply too old.

That’s why we made our choice, offering “Norre” fishing camp as the most suitable place for accommodation. It is situated at the very centre of the islands at the bank of skerry, which protects this place from strong sea winds. There are five cottages for 6 persons 104 sq.m. each. Cottages are fully-equipped, there are three separate bedrooms, a fireplace and electric sauna in each cottage that makes them absolutely comfortable for a family vacation.

There is also a mooring with good boats with four-stroke engine close to cottages.
So, a trip to Aland islands is perfectly good both for passionate fishermen and quiet family relaxation. You’ll need a ferry to get to the islands, so, it’s easy to imagine how happy your child will be, exploring this super-ship!

Expert’s recommendations:

You won’t need heavy and powerful tackles while fishing in Aland. All you’ll need – two rods: one – 8-9’ test 30- 40g for pike and sea-trout, another – test 5-20 g for perch.

In case, if you want to try something special, jerk-bait, for instance, Aland is absolutely perfect spot for it. It’s very popular there and local guides are good at it, besides, you’ll find a plenty of unusual and interesting lures. We recommend you taking a soft rod up to 70 g test and Strike pro Buster jerk for jerk-bait. Watch, what happens next.

All the tackles we offer, are chosen according to our experience. They are not accidental! All the tackles, clothes and fishing accessories are for sale right in our office and in our web-site www.geofishing.ru
